St. Teresa of Ávila’s Interior Castle is considered to be one of the most important works of Christian mysticism. It offers a detailed map of the soul’s journey toward union with God – and teaches us how to recognize the movements of God in our own lives. Written for her Carmelite sisters in the 16th century, the text uses the metaphor of a vast, crystal castle with many rooms to represent the interior life of the soul. Each of the seven “mansions” marks a deeper stage of spiritual development, through which the soul is drawn closer to its Divine source. At the heart of Teresa’s vision is the belief that God already dwells within each person, and that through prayer, reflection, and the letting go of worldly attachments, the soul can move inward to encounter Him.
I spent some time immersing in her most famous work in the Summer of 2025 during my studies at Xavier University. It was life changing for me. If you are interested in taking part in a study group let me know. It will take place at St Andrews on Wednesdays from 6.30pm – 7.30pm (from June 10th – July 8th).

The first book listed below is essential reading for group participation (click on the link and it will take you to the book on Amazon). The second book is an optional purchase for those who may wish to more deeply immerse in St Teresa’s words.
